St Martin is a tiny island in Bangladesh. It’s the most beautiful and only coral island (দ্বীপ) Also. The island is located in the northeast part of the Bay of Bengal (বঙ্গোপসাগর) and 8 Km west of the northwest coast of Myanmar previous Barma.
The full area of this island around 8 km. It has also few different island which is disconnected from this island Chera Dwip, Daruchini Dwip, Aguntuk Dwip. People who are locally live there they call it “Narkel Ginjira” it means Coconut Island.
There is huge coconut tree around the island. That’s why people call it Narkel Ginjira. Every year people visit there with there family and beloved one to get natural refreshment from this beautiful island. A Bangladeshi famous writer Humayun Ahamed also made a house and named it Shomudr Bilash. Shomudra Bilash is situated near the Daruchini Dwip. People also go there and take photos. The first Human who discovered this island about 250 years ago and named it Zazira.
Zazira was renamed with Saint Martin Island during the British Period. From 1989 to 2004 Bangladeshis were not allowed to go there. However, the system had changed and now everyone can go there whether they are Bangladeshi or Foreigners. There are around 7500 people live there and their main profession is catching fish from the Bay of Bengal. More Importantly, the Island is totally electricity less. As a matter of fact there is no electricity on the whole Island.
People use the generator to get the power support. There was also no mobile network tower in saint martin island. Now every company operator has their mobile network. People can communicate with their family without any hassle they can also use 3G network service from the different operator. There are a lot of hotels in saint martin and they offer generator service till 11 PM. Now few hotels also offer 24 hrs generator service for tourist. The best season to go to st martin is the winter season. People from a different country every year comes here to enjoy the beauty of st martin.
When the first time I visited St Martin I traveled there through speed boat which is risky to go there. Then after whenever I went there, I avoided speedboat. Seatruck is the safest transport to go there.
How to go, St Martin:
From Dhaka: Finally, you need to go to Teknaf via bus and then from teknaf to st martin and then Seatruck. There are a range of transport service available to go to Teknaf from Dhaka Saidabad Bus Stand, Gabtoly and Mohakahli. Among them Unique, Saint Martin Paribahan, Shamoly, Bagdad Express are best. The Normal class fare around 900 tk to go to Teknaf. At Teknaf you need to purchase a Sea truck ticket to go the island.
From Cox’s Bazar: There are a range of buses to go to Teknaf from Cox’s Bazar Bus Stand: You can easily go there within 2-3 hours and the fare is almost 50-150 Tk.
From Chittagong: You can easily go there from Chittagong to Teknaf via a range of Transport Services.
